Next Up: Norfolk - GT Cup heads to Snetterton
Following Donington Park and Brands Hatch, the GT Cup heads to Norfolk’s Snetterton Circuit for its next four races. With seven races done with the points tables are starting to take shape.
In the Overall Title fight, it’s Feathers Motorsport leading the way thanks to Archie Clark and Tom Canning’s excellent performance in Group GTH. Paddock Motorsport’s Mark Smith continues to dominate Group GT3 securing him the second spot in the Overall Title table, while Group GTC’s Fraser Fenwick and Iain Campbell are just five points behind Smith.
With Smith’s GT3 performance at Brands Hatch, the gap between him and Darren Kell in the Group tables has grown ever so slightly. Peter Erceg in the JMH Automotive Audi R8 rounds out the top three in Group GT3.
Richard Chamberlain makes his delayed return to the GT Cup grid following an unscheduled absence at the start of the season. The unique, orange Porsche gives Paul Bailey and David Brabham an extra body to race against in Group GTO.
In Group GTC, Fraser Fenwick and Iain Campbell retain the lead in the points tables, though some solid results from Frank Morris and James Pickford at Brands Hatch put them just 21 points behind.
Also within striking distance are Graham Tilley and Will Tregurtha, thanks to the Triple M Motorsport Lamborghini’s first win of the season last time out. Jack Gadd makes his championship debut in the DWG Motorsports Lamborghini Huracan, along with Mark Havers and Jarrod Waberski finally hitting the road after technical issues during testing before Donington Park.
James and Bill Caley had a brilliant performance at Brands Hatch, taking a complete set of victories and retaining the points lead in Group GTB. Tom Walpole and the monstrous KTM had a good run on the Saturday last time out, but couldn’t stay to contest Sunday’s two races.
As well as leading the Overall Title, Archie Clark and Tom Canning also buffed their group points tally thanks to a pair of wins last time out. The pair currently have a 55-point lead over SVG Motorsport’s Marc Elman and Owen Hizzey.
However, it was Innovation Racing with Cresta who stopped Feathers’ clean sweep. Simon Griffiths and Hadley Simpson also took a pair of victories, allowing them to close in on SVG for second in the points tables. Griffiths will be driving solo this weekend with Simpson unable to join him.
Oselli Motorsport seem to be settling into their new Aston Martin Vantage and no doubt Matt Eddolls and Sam Maher-Loughnan will be looking to build on their previous podium finishes.
The SVG Motorsport/Innovation Racing battle continues in Group GTA as SVG’s Neil Wallace and Ian Astley lead the group ahead of Innovation’s Brent Millage. Wallace and Astley took a win on both Saturday and Sunday, while Millage took his first of the season during Sunday’s Pit Stop Race. Lewis Tindall and Mack Priestwood in the #73 Ginetta found their groove, with a win and two podiums, finally netting some points after a nightmare start to the season at Donington Park.
In terms of Team points, it’s SVG Motorsport leading the way with Innovation Racing sitting in second place. Reigning Team Champions Topcats Racing currently sit in third place, with a bit of work to do to catch up with their rivals. JMH Automotive and Feathers Motorsport round out the top five.
Drivers get another opportunity to add to their Sprint and Sporting Challenge titles this weekend as well, the former currently being led by Archie Clark, while Fraser Fenwick and Iain Campbell rank as the highest scores in the Sporting Challenge.
Track action for the GT Cup kicks off on Saturday morning with free practice at 9.45am, followed swiftly by two qualifying sessions. All four races this weekend will be broadcast live on the GT Cup YouTube and Facebook channels.
