Maserati confirms Group GTO model eligibility for GT Cup Championship

Iconic automotive brand Maserati has confirmed that the racing model of its MC20 will be eligible for 20 different race series on five continents for 2026, including the GT Championship.

The famous Italian manufacturer has a well-respected success rate in the world of motorsport that centres from Formula 1, and has since blossomed into GT racing after the millennium - famously claiming victory in the 24 Hours of Spa back in 2005, 2006 and 2008 with the venerable MC12.

Its most recent offering - the MC20 - has already shown itself to be a force on the European scene in SRO championships over the past two years. Maserati itself has now confirmed that, alongside a further 19 global series, the car will be eligible for competitors of the GT Cup Championship to compete with, the Trident further expanding the choice for gentleman drivers and teams who wish to get behind the wheel.

Customers would be eligible to compete via the championship’s GTO group to ensure a fair and competitive environment, with balance of performance to be managed accordingly as is the case with all new and existing machinery across the multi-group system.

Maria Conti, Head of Maserati Corse, says: “We're very proud we can further increase the range of competitions in which Maserati can participate. Our passionate customers are the focus of all our activities; as such, we are committed to accommodating their desires and needs, offering teams and gentleman drivers multiple opportunities to compete on the track.

“We promised we would return to closed-wheel racing and we did so, reaping a season of great successes; now, not only are we continuing to rack up victories but – most of all driven by all the requests we receive every day – we are also extending the competitions to the ones we can take part in. Maserati is synonymous with the track, where it was founded almost 100 years ago. All we can do is therefore to create opportunities to add more names to our glorious trophy haul”.

Alongside this, Ginetta also recently revealed its latest V8 GT car at Spa-Francorchamps last weekend (28/29 June). This would again fit specifications for Group GTO eligibility, with BoP to be determined after it makes its public global racing debut.
