Race Report for Round Five - Sprint Race

FF Corse and Bonamy Grimes win fragmented sprint race

The GT Cup’s first sprint race of the weekend rather lived up to its name as competitors endured two red flag stoppages before an eight minute run to the flag.

Early contact between Richard Chamberlain and Bonamy Grimes left Chamberlain’s Porsche stranded causing the first stoppage. The race was about to restart when the red flag had to be brought out again for Kevin Riley’s poorly Mosler. Green flag running eventually resumed for a final duration of just eight minutes, after which it was polesitter Bonamy Grimes who took the win.

It was a Ferrari top three in GTC including Grimes. Second went the way of Dan de Zille in the #19 FF Corse 458, ahead of John Dhillon in his Spirit of Race Ferrari 488. Tom Webb looked to have second in GTC sewn up, but a spin on the last lap sent him tumbling down the order to wind up fifth in the group.

Having lost Chamberlain at the start of the race, and the NMA Mosler being hampered by issues, GTO was left with just John Seale in the running. Starting fifth on the grid, Seale drove a good, clean race to climb his way up the order. Kevin Riley did manage to join the restarted race, but could only muster a seventh place finish.

Seale’s win was the first half of a double whammy for team JMH Automotive - the team’s second car scooped up a win too. John Whitehouse claimed victory in the Signature RV/First Choice Group McLaren, finishing ahead of Chris Carr in the GT Marques Porsche Cayman GT4 and David Holloway’s Ginetta G55.

It should have been a two-horse race in GTB though Fraser Smart’s Lotus didn’t finish the restart lap. This left David Frankland to run around on his own, and unsurprisingly he took the win.

GTA winner Kris Prosser put in an excellent performance to finish not only top of his group, but eighth overall - ahead of all the GTH finishers. Second in the group went the way of polesitter Grahame Tilley, while Del Shelton, GTA’s other competitor couldn’t start the race. Shelton’s car suffered damage in an earlier session and wasn’t fit to start the sprint.
